English Bulldogs go under the classification of non-sporting dogs of the American Kennel Club. Despite its vicious appearance, the dog turns out to be amiable and even funny. It is good with children and strangers, though does not enjoy the presence of some other dogs. Nevertheless, other pets do not cause any negative reactions. English Bulldogs - History
The breed originated in England about 800 hundred years ago. The purpose of the dog was bull baiting, hence the name. This kind of entertainment was pretty lucrative to the Bulldog's owners. A good fighting dog was supposed to display a great deal of strength and toughness. It was not a rare thing for owners to mutilate a dog while it was being hung on a bull. In case the dog did not let the bull go, it was considered to be unaware of pain and was valued greatly.
In 1835, this practice was abolished and the breed seemed to have lost a lion's share of its popularity together with its main function. Fortunately, by that time, the breed had acquired a number of admirers who could not let it perish. Their aim was to breed out some undesirable features such as ferocity and develop a good-natured Bulldog for people to enjoy its personality. English Bulldogs - Physical Description

The Bulldog's original function explains fully its physical qualities and appearance. The Bulldog's husky sturdy build made it easier for the dog to fight such a huge animal as the bull. A protruding lower jaw provided for a tough grip and let it breathe easily. A massive head, a short muzzle and loose skin turning into wrinkles on the face distinguish the Bulldog. Weight: 40-50 pounds Height: 12-15 inches Color: Its short coat can be tan, white or reddish-brown. Life Expectancy: 8-10 years English Bulldogs - Health Concerns
CHD, CKS are the number one concerns. They often experience problems with knees, hips, elbows and eyes. English Bulldogs should be well cared for to avoid skin fold dermatitis.
